Reliance Retail is India’s largest and most profitable retailer with a diverse omni-channel presence via integrated store concepts and digital commerce platforms, providing consumers with an outstanding value proposition, superior brands and quality, and an unrivalled shopping experience.

It focuses on customer centric approach which has emphatically worked in their favor and collaborated more consumers across India and increasing the customer base by 24% YOY to 193 million which indirectly attracted enthusiastic merchants to partner with their retail business. The other reason behind this significant increase in the numbers was because of extension of their service in tier II & tier III markets while doubling its warehouse and fulfillment capabilities across the board. Apart from that digital platform added new customer base from the remotest location. Reliance Retail operates a chain of convenience stores, supermarkets, specialty and online stores providing choice, convenience and superior value.

The operation of such magnitude has seen multiple disruptions during & post pandemic, Reliance Retail was able to deliver industry-leading sales and profit. The business posted all-time high revenues and EBITDA with steady improvement in profit margins.

Financial Highlights

On a consolidated basis, Reliance Retail delivered a Gross Revenue of INR 252,161 crore against INR 194,249 crore for the previous year & registered a growth of 30%, a resilient performance despite challenges from COVID disruptions throughout the year.

The business crossed a milestone of Rs 10,000 crore EBITDA in a year for the first time. It recorded an all-time high EBITDA of INR 16,266 crore for the year FY23 against INR 10,365 crore in FY22, a growth of 57% YoY. RR delivered a consolidated profit after tax of INR 7,009 crore against INR 4,938 crore for the previous year registering a growth of 41.94%. On a standalone basis, RR delivered Revenue of INR 2,51,972 crore against INR 1,93,456 crore against INR 1,49,925 crore recorded in FY22.

It has shown tremendous growth across all product categories from consumer electronics to grocery to apparel & footwear. At the same time, it continued to expand its existing businesses to newer frontiers of technology, innovation, scale and execution. Over 3,000 stores were opened, adding up to 17,053 stores with a total area of 61.5 million sq. ft. Recently, Reliance Retail Ventures Limited announced that a wholly owned subsidiary of the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority will invest INR 4,966.80 crore into RRVL parent company of RR.

  • Debt Service Coverage ratio for the current period i.e., FY23 is 3.35 from 4.33 which was recorded in FY22. This happened due to increase in finance cost.
  • Return on Investment for FY23 accounted for 25.51% which was earlier 3.09% in FY22. It increased due to income from sale of long-term investments.
  • Inventory turnover period for FY23 is 8.74 which was earlier 9.19 in FY22.

Reliance Retail has a strong presence in digital commerce channels through AJIO.com, a curated fashion & lifestyle store bringing best of national and international brands to customers doorsteps and Jiomart, India's largest hyperlocal retail solution that leverages the wide network of Reliance Retail's grocery stores and well-established supply chain infrastructure.

With the recent entry into FMCG sector under Reliance Retail Consumer Brand & strategic acquisition of brands like campa, sure water etc. It seems very ambiguous to expand their market prospect against the likes of HUL, ITC & Nestle’s of the world.

Reliance is known for partnering with well renounced foreign brands & introducing them in Indian market. Recently, they entered into long term franchise agreement with Balenciaga to introduce the luxury brand.
